Multiple identity, discrimination & conflict

  • We’re all human – can’t put people in boxes, we’ve all got multiple identities
  • Mainstreaming approach makes it easier to address multiple discrimination
  • Human rights approach focuses on the “human” rather than a particular aspect of identity
  • May be tension / conflict within equality groups e.g. sectarianism, or between equality groups e.g. between religion / belief and sexual orientation – Need to address this rather than ignore it (human rights approach helps with this)
